KAYUNGA DISTRICT DISASTER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE HELD AN INTERACTIVE MEETING WITH A TEAM FROM NETHERLANDS RED CROSS AT THE DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS ON 09/11/2023
In attendance was the head of international programs for Netherlands, Director Disaster risk management for the red cross society, District Planner, DPO , PAS, DHO and other technical staff.
The Netherlands Red Cross are the funders of the echo PPP ( pilotic programmatic partnership) project .
The purpose of the meeting was to identify challenges and monitor the project on how the DDMC is putting into practice the actions of the District multi hazard contingency plan.
The chairperson thanked them for forming the disaster management committee and highlighted a challenge of inadequate funds.
The District Production Officer outlined the challenges faced by the project which include ignorance, reluctance and primitivity since people living in flood affected areas do not respond even when given early warnings. He encouraged the team to continue with capacity building.
DHO talked about the recent chorea outbreak in Kayunga which was handled through massive sensitization of its signs and symptoms to the community. He additionally talked about the current floods in Galiraya which have cut the health facility from the residents . Which could only be managed by the many boats and fuel being availed to aid movement.
The Red Representative advised the committee members to always prepare for worst-case scenarios to be safe but not the waiting for disaster and react after.
