Production & Marketing

Production and Marketing

Its one of the major employers of the residents of the District and it’s the major driving force for the transformation of our society.

The department of Production is headed by the District Production Officer Dr Mugabi David

Its constituted by the sectors of;

Agriculture

Entomology

Fisheries

Veterinary

Commercial

Vision

Our vision is “a community with improvement in household incomes for high standard of living”.

Mandate

The mandate of the department is “to promote household income and food security”.

Strategic Objectives of the Department

  • To promote Agricultural production, agro-processing and reduce post harvest losses to increase household incomes.
  • To reduce diseases and pest production losses through effective control measures.
  • To ensure effective drugs, farm inputs and agro-chemicals to the community through regulation and control measures.

 Planned Actions, Outputs and Outcomes for the FY 2015/16.

The department will continue to focus more attention on the ‘Kayunga District Road map’. that was developed by the District leadership in FY 2013/2014 .The roadmap among other reasons is aimed at increasing the visibility, relevancy and effectiveness of the various funds that are aimed at improving livelihoods in the community and cause economic transformation.

Under this plan, the district is using  50% of its grants like the Production & Marketing Grant , DDEG funds  on enterprises that have the potential to transform the community from subsistence to middle income which is  in line with the Ugandan Vision 2040.

To realise this goal therefore, the district has continued to mobilise funds to fund the following critical enterprises  under the District road map;

  1. The Coffee-banana-cattle enterprise mix. This one has been code named the ‘Kayunga District coffee village project’. Click to view : Kayunga District Coffee Village
  2. Promotion of Artificial Insemination and the bull scheme to improve the grade of livestock and improve productivity.
  3. Promotion of commercial beekeeping.Click to view: Commercial Bee Keeping Concept note
  4. Promotion of cage and pond fish farming

The above interventions are supported by two additional strategies;

  1. Promotion of tourism.
  2. Strengthening of public-private partnerships.

The recurrent components of these grants from the various departments have  supported the implementation of the road map across the stakeholder divide to ensure effective implementation.

Challenges in the sector

  • Inadequate funds
  • Fake agricultural inputs & chemicals
  • New devastating pests & diseases
  • Lack of good meat handling , processing & marketing facilities
